dossier | flush setting

I’m excited to take you behind the scenes to learn about one of the techniques I use to create our jewelry: flush setting. Now, don’t worry—I’m going to keep this simple and fun. My goal is to give you a peek into my process without getting too technical. Think of this as our little jewelry-making adventure together!

What is flush setting?

Imagine a gemstone sitting perfectly flat against the metal of a ring, almost like it's nestled in a comfy chair. That’s what we call a flush setting! It’s a technique where the stone sits level, or "flush," with the surface of the metal. I love this setting because it not only looks sleek and modern but also keeps the stone secure. Plus, it’s perfect for everyday wear because it protects the stone from getting knocked around too much.

Why flush setting?

I fell in love with this style of setting when one of my great friends from college was getting married, and she asked me to make her a headband. I wanted it to sparkle on her special day, but not be too crazy. I thought flush setting would be the perfect setting - but I had no idea how to do it. After about three weeks and 150 cubic zirconia stones, I finally felt like I had made the perfect accessory for her wedding. It only had 15 CZs instead of 150 - but the other 10 I made also had 15!

how I Flush Set Stones

The first step in any setting process is to measure the gemstone. Next, I mark where each stone will be placed on the piece. It’s crucial to give the stones enough space, so they don’t end up crowding each other. Think of it like setting a table for a dinner party—everyone needs a bit of elbow room!

Next, I create a little seat for the stone to nestle into. I start by drilling a small hole and then carve out the space, kind of like scooping out just the right amount of ice cream to fit perfectly in a cone. As I go, I keep checking the fit of the stone to make sure the space is just right—not too big, not too small. Lastly I cut a tiny “seat” where the stone will rest. This step requires precision, so I use a magnifying glass to make sure everything is perfectly level, just like checking to see if a picture frame is straight on the wall.

The last steps include cleaning any metal, debris, oils, etc., so the stone will sit perfectly in its new home. Lastly, I set the stone and secure it in place. And voila!

Why I Love Flush Setting

I love flush setting because it allows me to create sleek, modern designs that keep your stones safe and secure. It’s a technique that requires a lot of patience and precision, but the end result is always worth it—a beautiful, durable piece of jewelry that you can wear and enjoy for years to come.

So, there you have it—a little behind-the-scenes peek at how I work with flush settings. I hope you enjoyed this journey into my world of jewelry making. To shop all our pieces with flush settings, click here.
