BUILDING A LOOK from YOUR CLOSET | INSPIRED STYLE FROM INSTAGRAM & PINTEREST -- FEELING STYLISH IN YOUR OWN CLOTHES
Have you ever seen a photo and thought, I want to wear that, but where do I start? 1. Why do I like it? Is it the colors? Is it the style of pant or shirt? What about this are you drawn to? 2. what’s in my closet? Now we know why you like it, so lets see what you have in your closet. Do you have a similar cut pant but in a different collor? Do you have a button down that would be a great layer? 3. try it on. Mix and match your options and play. This is when you get to add your own spin to the design. Try tucking in if you feel like you look a little too straight, my favorite is the college/french/millenial tuck. 4. add accessories. To infuse more of yourself in the look add your favorite bangle, bag, or shoes. OR all three! LET'S TRY IT
THE INSPIRATION I love Pinterest, I can spend hours scouring my feed to be inspired for recipes, style, birthday party ideas, and on and on and on. This look is from my board and I love it. I love the tonal look of the outfit with the pop of color on the shoes. It feels relaxed and easy, effortlessly cool. So with this look I start to break down the pieces. brown/tan sweater, white shirt, straight khaki colored pants, pink shoes, and a brown purse
SHOPPING MY CLOSET | I'm not going to lie, this part can be tough - sometimes you just don’t have the “right” piece. But other times you have something that can work but it isn’t exact. And this is where we work. I have picked out of my closet four sweaters that fit the style and color. A few white tees of differing lengths to see what looks best. Two pants, one is the right style of pant (relaxed and straight) but not the right color, and the other is the right color but wide leg. And lastly a few shoe options to change the vibe depending on what I go with. Red flats to be a little more “dressed up,” pink sneakers, and my tan loafers if I want to go full tonal. Ok, time to try some looks on
LOOK no. 1 | I combined the darker sweater with my wide leg khaki pants (ignore the wrinkles). My longest white tee so it would peep out and my red flats. I threw on my fringe brown bag to add some texture. While I like this look, for today the sweater is just too thick for the weather. But I think I got the essential vibe of the look with a little Christina-isms thrown in too.
LOOK no. 2 | In this look I paired my v-neck sweater with a shorter crew neck white tee. Wore my straight leg green pants and pink sneakers. I grabbed a woven tan bag, once again for texture, but to also make the look feel al ittle more springy. I was hesitant to wear the pink sneakers as I thought it might be too much with the green pants. But I like it. I think this look wins for the day.
A FEW MORE NOTES | 1. make a list : If you go through this exercise and start noticing you have holes in your wardrobe. Make a list of pieces you may want to add. 2. build a style board : One of the best things I have done is build a Pinterest style board. Anytime I see a look online (website, instagram, pinterest itself) I pin it. Then I start to see trends of the style that resonates with me. 3. have fun! Don’t be afraid to play. Mix your textures, your colors, even seasons. Sometimes the best looks come from something I never would have imagined would go together.
For some people, this comes easily, while for others, it's really difficult. But, as with anything, it does take practice. When I recently went on a girls trip, I helped many of my girlfriends style their outfits and had a blast - it made me realize that with a little help of tips and tricks, they could really take their outfit up a notch.
That being said, don't push yourself to feel uncomfortable in what you are wearing. The last thing you want to do is feel self-conscious, awkward, or itchy! Go with what makes YOU feel your best self.
